Tire rack
Have you ever had something that was a constant pain, always needed repair or a few well placed welds? This one is mine. This rack was built so long ago and in such a rush that it has been a pain ever since. Lately it seems that the welds want to crack. The thought of that 200 pound bomb coming off the jeep at seventy miles an hour just kinda makes my spine tingle. Does anyone know a good lawyer? Oh wait that would be an oxymoron wouldn't it? Sorry Blair, just kidding. Let me tall you about this rack, this thing has character. It is so crooked that it's almost confusing to look at, don't stare at it too long cuz you might go crosseyed. It used to have a Rubicon style that bolted to it. That was sent to the scrap heap some time ago with a little coaxing from my friends, they convinced me that hanging 200 pounds off the back of my jeep but 800 was simply pushing it. All in all though it is holding up fairly well. It holds two five gallon gas cans a Hi-lift and my spare. All of the attachment points have been reinforced with 1/4" plate and a few well placed gussets. The latch was completely hand made, the striker plate was bent with a torch, v big hammer and allot of test fits. The latch I made from a pice if 1/2" smoth rebar. I even placed a spring inside and attached it to the latch with a washer and a cotter pin. Pretty slick huh? Alas, my creation is nearing the end of it's life. I have plans to build a new one from 1" pipe.

The gas cans are Swiss I believe, I purchased the from a military surplus catalog. They have the hinged lids vice the screw on type, they have never leaked. |
